Basketball

Basketball is a fast-paced team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop, which is mounted 10 feet high on a backboard. The game is played on a rectangular court with a three-point line, free-throw line, and key area. Players advance the ball towards the basket by dribbling (bouncing the ball while moving) or passing it to teammates. Points are awarded for field goals made from inside or outside the three-point line and for free throws following certain fouls.

Originating in the United States in the late 19th century, basketball emphasizes skills such as shooting, passing, dribbling, and defensive techniques. It is governed by rules that dictate the flow of the game, including fouls, violations, scoring, and time limits. The objective is to score more points than the opposing team within a designated time frame, typically divided into quarters or halves.

Basketball is a popular sport worldwide and is known for its dynamic play and athleticism, with professional leagues such as the NBA (National Basketball Association) in the United States showcasing high levels of competition and talent.
